Lower Body Injuries

Whether you’re an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just someone who loves a good walk in the park, lower body injuries can happen to anyone.

Understanding Lower Body Injuries

Lower body injuries can be broadly categorised into two main types: soft tissue injuries and bone injuries. Each type can manifest as either acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-standing) and knowing the difference can help you better understand your condition and the treatment you may need.

1. Soft Tissue Injuries

Soft tissue injuries involve muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other non-bony structures. These are the most common types of injuries we see and can range from mild strains to more serious tears.

  • Acute Soft Tissue Injuries: These injuries occur suddenly, often from a twist, fall, or impact. For example, sprained ankles, where the ligaments around the ankle joint are overstretched or torn, and acute muscle strains, like a pulled calf muscle, are common. Acute tendon injuries, such as an Achilles tendon rupture, also fall into this category and typically result from a sudden force, like jumping or pivoting. In almost all cases a full tendon rupture will require consultation with a surgeon for surgical correction.
  • Chronic Soft Tissue Injuries: These develop over time due to repetitive stress, poor biomechanics, or overuse. Conditions like plantar fasciitis, which causes heel pain due to the overuse of the plantar fascia, and Achilles tendinopathy, a common overuse injury affecting the Achilles tendon, are examples.

2. Bone Injuries

Bone injuries can range from small stress fractures to complete breaks. These injuries require careful management and often a more extended recovery period.

  • Acute Bone Injuries: These occur from a sudden impact, like a fall or a direct blow. Fractures are the most obvious example, and they can happen in any bone in the lower body, from the toes to the hip. In this instance, depending on the bone, additional intervention in the form of casting from your doctor is essential (if this hasn’t already been performed).
  • Chronic Bone Injuries: Stress fractures are tiny cracks in the bone that occur from repetitive force, often from high-impact sports like running. They develop gradually and can become serious if not treated promptly.

How We Can Help

At Maroochy Podiatry we offer a range of therapies designed to address various lower body injuries and facilitate recovery.

  • Manual Therapies: These include techniques like massage and mobilisation to relieve tension, improve circulation, and enhance joint movement. Manual therapies can help reduce pain and stiffness, promoting faster healing.
  • Dry Needling: This involves inserting fine needles into specific trigger points to relieve muscle tension and pain. It can be particularly effective for chronic conditions like tendinopathy and muscle tightness.
  • Red Light Laser Therapy: Also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), this treatment uses specific wavelengths of light to reduce inflammation, accelerate tissue repair, and alleviate pain.
  • Shockwave Therapy: This non-invasive treatment uses sound waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. It’s particularly effective for chronic soft tissue injuries like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy.
  • Exercises: A tailored exercise programme can help strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and restore range of motion.

The Benefits of Seeking Treatment

You might be tempted to “tough it out” when you’re dealing with an injury, but seeking professional treatment can help with recovery time, pain management, improve mobility and/or prevent further injury.
