Dry Needling
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique where a very fine, sterile needle is inserted into specific muscles, usually ones that feel tight or have palpable trigger points (muscle knots).Dry needling uses the same type of needle as acupuncture but is different in its origins and intended outcomes. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, practiced for thousands of years.
It focuses on balancing the body’s energy, or Qi (Chi), by inserting needles into specific points along energy pathways called meridians. Dry needling, on the other hand, is based on modern western medicine principles, focusing on musculoskeletal issues like tight muscles, trigger points, and pain.
How Does It Work?
When muscles become tight or irritated, they can develop knots or trigger points. These points can cause pain or restrict movement. Dry needling targets these areas by stimulating the muscle with the needle, encouraging it to relax and release tension. Why Consider Dry Needling?
Dry needling can be helpful for a range of issues, especially if you’re experiencing:- Tight muscles or muscle spasms
- Chronic pain in areas like the calves, heels, or lower legs
- General muscle discomfort that just won’t go away
