Diabetic Assessment

Maroochy Podiatry Diabetic Assessment 2
If you have diabetes, you’re probably already aware of the importance of managing your condition. But did you know that regular diabetic assessments by a podiatrist are a crucial part of that management? These assessments are like a wellness check-up for your feet, helping us to keep an eye on your overall health.

What is a Diabetic Assessment?

A diabetic assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your foot health specifically tailored for individuals with diabetes.

  1. Foot Examination
We take a close look at your feet, checking for any signs of cuts, blisters, calluses, or infections. We’re also on the lookout for any deformities, such as bunions or hammertoes, which can cause problems down the road.

  2. Skin and Nail Treatment
Healthy skin and nails are crucial, especially when you have diabetes. We spend some time tiding your nails and debriding any corns/callus to make sure there are no pressure points, entry points for bacteria, ingrowing toenails or fungal infections.

  3. Circulation Check
Good blood flow is essential for healing and overall foot health. We use a Doppler ultrasound to listen to the blood flow in your feet, checking for any signs of poor circulation.

  4. Nerve Function Check
Diabetes can sometimes lead to nerve damage, known as neuropathy. We’ll perform simple tests to assess your nerve function, such as using a tuning fork and monofilament to check your sensitivity to touch and vibration. Both tests together can give us a general understanding of any signs of loss of protective sensation / early signs of peripheral neuropathy.

  5. Footwear Assessment
We may look at your shoes to ensure they fit well and provide the right support. Ill-fitting footwear can lead to pressure points and wounds, which are particularly risky for diabetic patients.
  6.

Assessments Are Important!

Diabetic assessments are essential for several reasons:

  1. Early Detection of Problems
By regularly checking your feet, we can catch potential issues early, such as ulcers, infections, or decreased blood flow. Early detection is key to preventing complications and keeping your feet healthy.
  1. Preventing Serious Complications
Diabetes can make your feet more vulnerable to injuries and infections. Regular assessments help prevent small issues from becoming serious complications, such as infections that could lead to hospitalisation or even amputation.
  1. Managing Neuropathy and Circulation Issues
Regular checks allow us to monitor any changes in your nerve function and circulation. If we notice any problems, we can notify you GP so that they can recommend treatments or lifestyle changes to manage these issues.

How Does a Diabetic Assessment Help Monitor Your Disease?

A diabetic assessment isn’t just about your feet; it’s a crucial part of managing your overall health. By keeping an eye on your foot health, we can monitor how well you’re managing your diabetes. For example, poor circulation or nerve function can be signs that your blood sugar levels aren’t well controlled. By regularly checking your feet, we can catch potential problems early, prevent complications, and help you maintain a good quality of life.

Remember, healthy feet are happy feet!
